MIAMI (June 3, 2021)–On May 19th, over 150 guests, including members of the Young Professional Network (YPN) and the South Florida real estate community, joined a livestream event entitled “Juxtaposing Gentrification – Turning Systematic Oppression into Social Good,” a panel discussion hosted by Miami’s Young Professional Network and Overtown Youth Network. The event was moderated by Trey Mourning, with TREIS Investment Associate Alex Lazo, LaVonne Idlette, and Geoff Rowan serving as featured speakers.
The group discussed the concept of gentrification in the Miami metro area and how the community can adopt new strategies to empower its residents. With the influx of investors and developers injecting capital towards new projects throughout Miami, the speakers addressed how these are impacting lower income areas, the importance of preserving culture, and how new projects are continuing to improve neighborhoods.
As a commercial real estate expert, Lazo provided insight on ways developers are revitalizing communities through beautification and job creation. He noted that while developers have the goal of making a profit, many have a larger vision and often allocate funds to beautify not only their site but surrounding areas as well through public parks and public art in addition to incorporating culturally rich amenities, small businesses and offerings into their projects.
The group enforced the importance of attending city commission meetings in order for residents to have a voice and bring the community into the conversation.
